Getting ready!

What am I going to do to get ready for such a long trip you might ask?   We'll if you look at the picture above it looks like the motorcycle in broken in half.  What I've done is make a list of items I need to review and repair before I can go on the trip.  1,  The motor has 420k miles on it, will it be able to keep up?  2, The transmission with the same amount of miles,  can it  go the distance?    3, Is my suspension in good shape?  4, The Frame, are there any cracks or stress points that will  weaken the frame ?
The Motor:    With all the miles on the engine it is still the original engine,  everything is as it came from the factory.  The only thing I have had to replace  are some of the head gaskets over the miles.   About a year and half ago on a trip to Panama the left chain guide broke ending the trip.  The good thing was that we had made it to Panama and were on the return leg.  Lucky for me that I saw the oil pressure light came on just as the guide broke. I immediately turn the engine off preventing further damage.
Once the bike was back home I had to figure out how to replace all the guides with out breaking the motor in half.  3 of the 4 guides are rather easy to replace but, the one that broke on the trip was the hardest one to replace, this was the one that the repair book said took about 18 hours.
After many hours of tossing ideas around we came up with the idea of a chain guide that breaks in two part at the mounting  point allowing you to sneak it in with out splitting the motor and in fact only takes about 3 hours vs 18.  Once the left side was in the rest were very easy.  I also  replaced the front chain guides.
Here are photos of the special chain guide used.  You can learn more about the chain guide by contacting the folks at Rhine West Performance at 210-826-0014.
